New Book Podcast With RJ Julia’s Roxanne Coady Brings In The Heavy Hitters


“Just the Right Book Podcast” lines up top authors and guests, generating new insights into the world of books

HAMDEN, CT – The first 60 days of “Just the Right Book Podcast,” hosted by Roxanne Coady and produced by CRN International’s Collisions division, has been marked by a constant flow of “A-List” guests and fascinating revelations about books and the literary world.

The weekly show was created to help book enthusiasts and engaged readers discover new and notable books in all genres, provide unique insights into favorite authors, and bring them up to date with what’s happening in the literary world. The host, Coady, is a highly-regarded go-to person for advice on books and owner of award-winning independent bookseller R.J. Julia in Madison, CT.

The show has already welcomed: James Patterson, the most prolific bestselling author of all time; Jacques Pepin, the world’s leading French chef; authors whose latest books have been featured on the cover of The New York Times Review of Books; former Saturday Night Live writer Maria Semple; a biographer who actually found mobster Al Capone to be a sympathetic figure; fragrance industry pioneer Jo Malone, whose autobiography tells an incredible story; and Daphne Merkin, whose latest work has been called the most important book ever written on mental illness.

Upcoming episodes are slated to include: Ann Patchett (Commonwealth), George Saunders (Lincoln in the Bardo) and “Ask Amy” advice columnist Amy Dickinson (Strangers Tend to Tell Me Things: A Memoir of Loss, Love and Coming Home).

Some of the interesting tidbits heard on the show’s first few episodes:

  • In Beth Macy’s research for Truevine, the true story of two African-American brothers who were kidnapped and displayed as circus freaks in the Jim Crow South, she entered a restaurant to ask the family some questions and was shown a sign on the wall instructing her to “sit down and shut up.”
  • Many fans of James Patterson don’t realize that as well as selling 350 million books, he also has developed a series of children’s books under the name Jimmy Patterson, including Give Please a Chance and Word of Mouse.
  • Legendary French chef (and author of 28 books) Jacques Pepin once worked at Howard Johnson, is getting a PhD from Columbia, and names cassoulet as his favorite holiday dish.
  • Deirdre Bair, author of Al Capone: His Life, Legacy, and Legend, says the gangster was so organized and detail-oriented that his crime operation was taught as a case study at the Harvard Business School, complete with org chart, titles, compensation, killings and more.
  • Maria Semple, discussing her latest book, Today Will Be Different, wants to “push her characters to the edge where they are forced to act and do crazy things.” She also notes that it’s “cheating” and “lazy writing” to portray a kid from a grownup’s angle. They have to sound, think and act like a kid.
  • In Memoirs of an Imaginary Friend, Matthew Dicks takes on the hard task of creating a five-year-old boy with autism as his narrator.
  • Luvvie Ajayi, author of I’m Judging You: The Do-Better Manual, says she likes her audience to feel like they are having brunch with her, and that she “says the things that they are thinking but do not dare to say.”

“As a bookseller of 27 years, obviously I love reading books, talking books and conversing with authors. Now I get to do this on a podcast,” Coady has said.

“I’m amazed at how Roxanne is able to probe authors to take you inside their books and the thinking behind them,” said Show Producer Christina Torres. “She asks the kinds of questions book lovers would ask and, with her guests, offers so many ideas for your next read. My only complaint is that my TBR list is now too long.”
